If you are within 30 miles of Indianola, we advise you to stop at Beaver Buckets to meet Jim Gaster, a skilled cooper smith. A cooper smith (for those of us who are rusty in our historical terms), is one who constructs wooden containers from a variety of woods, bands, and finishes. Gaster has made buckets for the Smithsonian Institute, the White House Visitor’s Center, the U.S. Botanical Gardens, the Lotte World Adventure amusement park in Seoul, Korea, and museums throughout the nation. Films such as Seabiscuit, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The Alamo, and The Legend of Zorro use buckets made at the Indianola business. Gaster’s wooden buckets are all serviceable as well as handsome. Watching a skilled craftsman build a container out of wood, and construct it well enough to hold water is an amazing experience.
